Limited Edition Pearson's Chocolate Nut Roll

If you read my Making History Monday post from this week, you know that I'm a huge fan of Pearson's Salted Nut Rolls. When I saw that they made a limited edition chocolate covered version, I thought it sounded fantastic and knew I had to try it. I mean really, how can you mess up something by putting chocolate on it?

Okay, in this case, the chocolate really messes up this candy bar. I'll put it into the same category as chocolate covered gummy bears; which is my way of saying that you shouldn't mess with an original if it's already perfect to begin with. I can't fault the Pearson's company for trying to expand their lineup or boost sales for a short period of time. In theory, the melding of nougat, caramel and peanuts with chocolate sounds like such a great idea, but it is not.

It's not that the chocolate is bad on this candy bar. In fact, the milk chocolate has a very nice taste. The problem is that it overpowers everything I love about this candy bar. The chocolate completely masks the amazing salty/sweet combination the original salted nut roll has going for it. You also lose some of the peanut taste from this bar. It appears to me that they use fewer peanuts and since they are blended with the chocolate it's no longer the second flavor you get when biting into a normal salted nut roll. When you bite into the original salted nut roll you first taste the salt, then the peanuts, then you get that sweet, sweet, soft caramel/nougat center. With this version, you taste chocolate, chocolate, hint of peanut, then some of the nougat center.

I don't want to be overly harsh on this bar, but a salted nut roll is an already perfect candy bar in my opinion. There's no reason to mess with the winning combination of salty and sweet it has going for it. I'm sure there are people out there that would enjoy this bar, but I'm not one of them.

Candy Professor

Wow, I did not see that coming! It looks like the perfect bar! But you saved me from candy-calorie wasting when I head to Wisconsin in June. That's the only time I can get Pearson's, and I'll save all my lovin' for the Nut Goodies and regular Nut Rolls. We're so used to chocolate on everything, but it's nice to remember that there are actually candies that are NOT about the chocolate!

cybele

Ooh, that does look tasty.

Thank you for the comments! Yes, it looks tasty and I'd hope everyone would try it at least once. There are some things you do not need to cover in chocolate, thank you for agreeing with me Candy Professor!
