As I said in my Making History Monday: Jelly Beans post yesterday, I absolutely love jelly beans. Jelly Belly has risen to the top of my list because they make some of the best gourmet jelly beans I've ever tasted. What do they do with the irregular jelly beans though? Well, they used to sell them only at the factory store as "Belly Flops". Normally half the price of regular Jelly Belly beans, you can also find these for sale on Ebay. Well, now they are sold in Dollar Stores around the country.
I've been saving this bag for some time to review. I'm adding it into my very long list of jelly beans I have to review. The first thing I love about this bag is the Jelly Belly on the front preparing to do a Belly Flop. If you can't tell, I love the marketing on this product and the bag is what draws people into purchasing this product, along with the price. Jelly Belly has done a great job with this packaging. I love this quote on the back:
I think a Jelly Belly is known for what's on the inside that matters most. The natural flavors they use, which makes them more expensive, also adds to their amazing flavors. So why would anyone care if 2 beans are stuck together or mishapen? I sure don't, they all taste fantastic to me, whatever the shape. I would also have to say that this is one of the best "lemonade from lemons" products I've ever seen. What a great idea to toss the irregular flops into a bin and resell them. Some money is better than no money.
We loved this bag and for $1, you can't go wrong. The only downside is that you do not have a reference to what you get in the bag. Every flavor you take out is a SURPRISE! This really bothered my wife as she ate a chocolate something and hated it. My son and I didn't care, we'll eat any Jelly Belly ever made, we love all of them. I could easily pick out 10 misshapen pear Jelly Belly beans, which are my absolute favorite.
Taste: 5/5 Loved It
Calorie Counter: 5oz bag = 3.5 servings = 35 beans per 1 serving = 140 calories, 0g fat
Price: $1.00 at The Dollar Store

They aren't available very often, but when they are...Jelly Belly fans love to snap up our famous Belly Flops These special beans taste great, but don't quite meet all of our demanding standards for size, color, shape and flavor.

Best candy idea ever. If it's Jelly Belly, I'm more than happy to eat them whatever shape they are!

I agree, shapes do not matter, it's all in the taste.
I just had a Jelly Belly product I did not like though, I'll post that review soon. It was very disappointing.
Thanks for commenting!

I love the idea that I get to eat the same thing at half the price. I totally agree with you both, Who cares what they look like? BTW, have you seen the JB easter mix? I have only seen it at the "gourmet" grocery here, but even at the ridiculous price they are extorting from me, I have been OD'ing on the little creme bunnies and pastel candy corn, and also great (IMHO) malted milk ball speckled eggs.

I am not a plain jelly bean fan at all, but Jelly Bellys are so amazing.
Although I must side with your wife; for me, an assorted bunch of Jelly Bellys can be a minefield. For every pear, peach, or grapefruit, I'm scared I'll accidentally eat a buttered popcorn or marshmallow.

After eating the entire bag, I have to admit, I only found 1 very hot cinnamon flavor that surprised the heck out of me. The other flavors were all very pleasant, including several coffee flavored beans. I'm sure each bag is different but I wonder if they take out the really odd "buttered popcorn" type flavors? That would make a great interview question for Jelly Belly.

I'd hope so, otherwise some Harry Potter Jelly Bellys could work their way in.
