My son was very excited when he received this candy as a present. "I got a new PEZ dispenser," he said. The only problem with that statement? This isn't a PEZ brand dispenser. This is a knock-off PEZ dispenser that you load knock-off Smarties into.
On first inspection of the package I saw SO MANY things wrong with this product:
1) WARNING! Do not aim at eyes or face. (uh what?)
2) Please wash the product thoroughly before use. (uh what, again!!)
3) Made responsibly in China.
4) What kind of crazy/scary face is BumbleBee making?
Woah, where do I start. First off, what does "WARNING! Do not aim at eyes or face" mean? We tore into package to find out. You load this just like you load a PEZ dispenser and as I said in my other review, isn't there an easier way to load this stuff? Once the candy is loaded, there is a spring in the bottom that pushes the candy to the top, much like a PEZ dispenser. Then, there's this little lever you pull back and KLIK forward (probably where the name comes from) and it shoots candy from BumbleBee's neck. Yes, it SHOOTS candy!! We had a few go several feet. We turned it into a game. Yes, I shot candy to the floor and wasted it. It's made in China, so no real loss and SugarKid thought it was a blast.
We didn't wash the dispenser before use but why would we need too? Leftover chemicals on it? Employees didn't wash their hands after using the restroom? I'm not quite sure, we skipped this part.
I'm not big on candy made in China. I have several Chinese friends that often visit home and tell me stories about the "Wild West" of business in China. Things are expanding so quickly and there isn't a lot of oversight going on. (Remember melamine?)
We tried the candy anyway, against my better judgement and without washing the dispenser. It wasn't bad. It's a complete flavor rip-off of PEZ though, just like the dispenser. The candy is a hard, crunchy Smartie-shape that tastes just like PEZ candy. I can describe the taste as lots of sugar with fruity flavoring added to it. If you like PEZ, this candy tastes amazingly similar.
I'm not sure why BumbleBee has such an ugly expression though. He doesn't look like that in the movie. We made up funny phrases that made his mouth get stuck that way, like... "Oh, watch out for the shooting candy!" "Oh no, I'm made in China". "Oh my, could we rip-off the PEZ idea any more than we have already?" You get the point.
I do think the Transformers graphics are pretty cool in this candy dispenser. Maybe they spent all of their money on licensing and didn't have enough leftover for real candy or a something that wasn't a complete rip-off of another existing product.
Taste: 3/5 Liked It (shooting candy is pretty darn fun!)
Calorie Counter: 2 candy rolls = 1 serving = 15 calories per roll, 0g fat
Price: gift (but saw at Dollar Store for $.50)
