Starburst Fave Reds & Sour Sweet

This is the 2nd of 2 reviews of the special varieties of Starburst being sold right now. In the 1st review I looked at Starburst Tropical and Summer Fun Fruits, this review is for Starburst Fave Reds and Sour Sweet. As I mentioned in the first review, it took me some time to find all of these. I found them one at a time, at various stores. It makes me want to learn more about how stores order and stock candy and how those choice are made.

The real question is this, "Why do we have so many flavors of Starburst?" Have you every wondered this? That question reminded me of a video I saw on TED.com. The video was even better this second time around--as it spoke directly to my "so many Starbursts" dilemma. Spend 10 minutes watching author Malcolm Gladwell talk about spaghetti sauce and you'll understand. It turns out that we have Howard Moskowitz to thank for this bevy of fruit flavors that is Starburst. He changed the food, candy and beverage industry forever with his findings about what makes you happy. As Howard said, "the mind knows not what the tongue wants". The idea is that we can't always explain what we want to eat, snack on or drink. So companies like Mars make tons of different types of candy, like 5 different types of Starbursts, to satisfy what we really want in our square chewy taffy tastes. As Howard would describe taste, there are different kinds of Starbursts for different types of people. Mars, a company that wants to make profit, is only happy to oblige.

Starburst Sour Sweet

This is the Starburst Sour Sweet package. I think this flavor is targeting a younger candy eater that likes Sour Skittles, Sour Patch Kids etc. However, this package isn't just sour, it also has a sweet side. I think this is a great idea. I like sour candy, but I do get tired of it. So this package solves that dilemma by providing a balance.

Sour Watermelon: very sour flavor with a definite punch or kick to it, okay watermelon flavor

Sour Green Apple: a very sour green apple flavor that has a hint of Jolly Rancher flavor to it, but there is a lot of sour in this one, good flavor

Sweet Blue Raspberry: definite raspberry flavor, Starburst does this flavor well, this one turns your mouth and lips a nice blue color

Sweet Strawberry: this flavor reminded me of Laffy Taffy, it is a fantastic strawberry flavor, better than the normal strawberry Starburst makes

Starburst Fave Reds

I still don't understand this flavor. I have to keep reminding myself of how Howard Moskowitz changed the way we look at food, candy and drinks regarding variety. My best guess is that this variety is for all those people that love Red 40 food coloring.

Fruit Punch: this is a 7-UP fruity punchy tasty flavor, reminds me of being at High School Prom, a good flavor

Strawberry: this tastes faintly of strawberry, which is a hard flavor to do, not bad but I like the sweet strawberry flavor much better

Cherry: easy to confuse with cough syrup, couldn't finish this one

Watermelon: not bad, reminds me of watermelon Jolly Rancher, this one was much much better than the sour watermelon flavor

After reading my reviews and watching the TED.com video, I hope everyone realizes there is a Starburst variety for everyone. They don't need you to like all the varieties, just one. But they need multiple varieties because we all have different tastes. I think this is true for all candy and the reason I started this blog. There is no "one perfect candy"...but there is a perfect candy for everyone...and I am sure enjoying tasting my way through them, one by one.

Candy Professor

Well, out of the four packages, it sounds like one or two flavors in each are really stand outs; so how about re-assembling a custom re-mix, "Starburst Sugarpressure Fruits"! And you can give the leftover, less favorite flavors to... oh, rats, that's always a problem. I always end up eating them all, even the flavors I don't like!

My favorite of every candy ever made is ALL OF THE RED CANDY FLAVORS! I know so many people agree with me on this as well as many of my friends! Naturally the FAVREDS is officially my favorite STARBURSTS candy, as well as my new favorite candy.
