I've never hidden the fact that I love Wonka candy. Normally, I enjoy anything they make. However, sometimes even your favorite candy companies let you down. This is one of those times (FYI...Wonka also disappointed me with their SweeTart Hearts). Chewy Sprees are compressed dextrose that has a tart flavor and a brightly colored candy shell. I'm not a huge fan of Chewy Sprees, but I love candy so I don't mind eating them. I think they are okay tasting, but not one of my first choices in candy, but I saw these mixed berry flavored Chewy Sprees on the shelf, I liked the packaging and figured I'd pick them up for a quick review.
The packaging is bubbly and kind of hip with candy floating around in various colors. I wasn't sure what flavor "mixed berry" would be since the packaging says nothing about what flavors are inside. This package is the same weight as a roll of Chewy Sprees but for some reason, I always think the roll has more candy in it.
When I opened the package and it had a very very faint fruity smell. My son (SugarKid) just turned 6 years old and he explained to me that the correct way to eat a Chewy Spree is to first suck all of the candy coating off of it, then you chew it. I'm not really sure where he learned this gem of knowledge from, but I tried that and found it unappealing. I then tried chewing the candy right away and was still unimpressed with the candy and its flavors. Speaking of flavors, I couldn't figure out what flavors were in this bag. I *think* there is cherry, strawberry, blue raspberry and grape??? I really have no idea, since they have very little flavor. I do know that this bag had WAY too many of the red color, I think that was cherry. It outnumbered any other flavor/color two to one. Also, these are not flavored or colored all the way through, which is disappointing. Overall, I feel that Wonka let me down with this variation on an original. However, since I wasn't crazy about the original to begin with....I won't hold it against Wonka. I am ready to try whatever new concoction they come up with next!!
