I started SugarPressure.com because I love candy and so does my family. It is an outlet for us to review candy for the rest of the world to enjoy. This blog also gives us an opportunity to regularly practice taking pictures and writing, as well as giving us something to think about besides work and current events.
The name, SugarPressure.com, is from something my son said when he was 3 years old. After a visit to the doctor's office where the nurse took his blood pressure, he started using "pressure" to describe everything...his "milk pressure was low", his "water pressure was low", etc. When we were standing in the checkout line at the grocery store one day, he tried very hard to convince me that his "sugar pressure" was so low that he just had to have candy to feel better. Clever Kid! It's been a family joke ever since.
Our family hasn't met a limited edition, special edition, or regional candy we didn't buy and try. We save up our change all year to spend on candy while on vacation (it's usually around $50). We don't eat it all right away, but we sure do love to search for, buy, and try new candy. We do not get paid for doing this, it's pure entertainment for us.
We like to review all sorts of candy, but the majority of candy will come from outlets that everyone in the U.S. has access too. Occasionally, we will review an international or regional candy just for fun. We will also post links to interesting stories, but will primarily handle that through Twitter.
I'm not a professional photographer or writer and won't pretend to be. My writing will be sloppy and my proofreader/editor wife will try and fix that. I'll try to make my photos look as good as possible, but I'm doing all of this on a shoestring budget. I built my own light box out of cardboard, white paper and some extra desk lamps. I am using a Nikon D50 DSLR w/ 35mm prime lens which will somewhat make up for my lack of photo skills. The D50 is mostly to capture fast moving children and our general life, but it can be re-purposed for candy photos at any time.
A little about me, I grew up in the Midwest, lived on the West Coast for several years, and then returned to the Midwest to start a family. We really enjoy living in fly-over country and with the internet we have access to all the candy we cannot buy locally. Both my wife and I work at a state university and we love academic life. My wife is a professor and I work as support staff in the technology field. We have 2 boys, but only 1 is old enough to eat candy (and we tend to limit him). The most important things to know about us are that we love candy, trying new things, and the excitement of hunting down hard to find things (like a limited edition candy). We also like to cook and enjoy the many cooking shows/blogs we have watch/read. I really hope this blog can open up a world of candy to people and that they might try something new because of something we've written.
